Malay Apple Health Benefit/Rose apple is an evergreen tree of the family Myrtaceae. It is native to Southeast Asia but has been naturalized in India, especially in the state of Kerala, where it is grown both for its fruit and for its medicinal properties. S. Jambos has a long history of use in Indian traditional medicine for the treatment of numerous ailments. The fruit has been used as a tonic for the brain and liver and as a diuretic.[] The flowers are believed to reduce fever, and the seeds were used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, and catarrh.[] In South-American cultures, the seeds have additionally been used as an anesthetic,[] and recent studies have shown S. Jambos extracts to have a similar analgesic efficacy to morphine in rats.[S. Jambos leaf decoctions were also used traditionally in the treatment of diabetes,[] although some studies have shown leaf extracts to be ineffective as antihyperglycemic agents.[] In Indian traditional medicinal systems, S. Jambos leaves were also used as a diuretic, an expectorant in the treatment of rheumatism; to treat sore eyes; and as a febrifuge.[] The bark of the S. Jambos tree is used to treat asthma, bronchitis, and hoarseness.[] Cuban healers have also used the root to treat epilepsy.[S. Jambos leaf extracts have also been shown to possess antiviral activity towards herpes simplex type 1 and type 2 and towards vesicular stomatitis virus.[,]

Common Names

Syzygium Jambos has several common names, reflecting a large number of regions in which it occurs as a garden or fruit tree or as an invader. The names include madhura Nelli, Malabar PlumchampakkaMountain Apple (shampoo), Chom pu or Chom-Phu. Terms like "plum rose""water apple""pera de agua""Cloud apple""Wax apple""Malay apple""jambrosade""Pau Têe"(Penang Hokkien spelled with Taiwanese Romanisation System), "pomarrosa", or the English equivalent, "rose apple". Several of these names also are applied to other species of Syzygium,[Rx] while "jambu" can also mean guava. The name Jambu for this fruit is in all likelihood limited to one or two of the twenty-odd major Indian languages, while most other languages use similar words (Jaamun, Jambool, etc.) for another fruit, smaller than the rose apple, and dark purple in color like the fruit of the eggplant. In Bangla, the fruit is called "golap-jaam" (Bengaliগোলাপজাম), which literally translates to "rose jaamun", in reference to its distinct aroma. In Karnataka the English common name is "rose apple", and the vernacular name is Pannerale(Paneer Hannu), while the name for the other one is Neale. Such a confusion of common names in horticulture is nothing unusual.
